1 pound hamburger (ground beef)

1 medium onion, diced

1 box sliced potatoes (e.g., Au gratin, scalloped, or cheesy scalloped)

milk, water, butter as called for by box instructions

What to Do

Place hamburger and onion in a medium saucepan on medium heat.
Break up and stir occasionally as hamburger browns (if hamburger has high fat content, drain excess fat before proceeding).
Meanwhile, heat water in microwave or on stove-top and preheat oven as box instructs.
Place butter in a medium casserole (1-½ qt) and add hot water (stir until butter is melted).
Add and mix potatoes, milk, hamburger, and sauce.
Bake uncovered as box instructs.

Au Gratin Potatoes

shredded cheddar cheese

cups (about 6 potatoes) thinly sliced, peeled or unpeeled, potatoes

Preheat oven to 350°F. Melt butter in a large skillet over low heat. Stir in flour, salt and pepper until smooth. Gradually add milk. Bring to a boil; cook and stir 2 minutes, until thickened. Remove from heat; stir in cheese until melted. Mix sauce, potatoes and browned hamburger/onion in casserole; cover and bake 1 hour; uncover; bake 30 minutes more or until the potatoes are tender.
